South Africa's Mia le Roux Steps Down from Miss Universe Pageant

South Africa’s Mia le Roux has pulled out of the Miss Universe finals in Mexico due to health reasons, according to organizers.

In a statement, the 28-year-old said, “This decision was incredibly hard, knowing the dreams and expectations placed on me.”

Le Roux made history as the first deaf woman to win Miss South Africa in August. Her victory sparked both celebration and controversy, with one finalist withdrawing after facing online abuse over her Nigerian heritage.

The Miss South Africa organization has pledged to support le Roux’s recovery, stating they are focused on her health and well-being. “We are here for her until she makes a full recovery.”

Although le Roux hasn’t revealed details about her condition, she expressed gratitude for the chance to prioritize her health, saying, “I’m thankful to focus on recovery so I can continue serving my country at my best.”

The organization commended her bravery and resilience during this difficult time, saying, “Our thoughts are with her as she works toward recovery.”

Just last month, Mia le Roux shared her excitement about representing South Africa at Miss Universe, calling it a “once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for my voice to be heard.” She also expressed her hope to highlight South Africa’s “beautiful diversity” on the global stage.

Diagnosed with profound hearing loss at just one year old, le Roux relies on a cochlear implant to assist her in hearing. Her journey has been an inspiring story of resilience and advocacy.
